The Southern Metropolitan Region is home to nearly 600,000 people. The boundary runs just outside the area from Kew to Sandringham, Warrigal Rd to the water.

In my inaugural speech to Parliament in 2006, I spoke about the area I represent:

"The Southern Metropolitan Region stretches from the once working-class cottages of Port Melbourne to the working families of Oakleigh and Ashwood; from the leafy green suburbs of Kew and Hawthorn to the sand belt in the south; the public housing in Hampton East to the Royal Melbourne Golf Club around the corner.

It represents so much of the diversity that makes this the greatest city in the world in which to live, work and raise a family.

The people of the Southern Metropolitan Region have an even wider diversity of backgrounds.

There are those who fled unspeakable terror -- the Holocaust survivors and their families in the Jewish community, and the Cambodian people who witnessed the killing fields of Pol Pot. There are those who came freely and optimistically seeking a better life, whether they were 10 pound tourists from the United Kingdom or the waves of migrants from Greece, Italy, Turkey or other countries and more recent arrivals. There are those whose families came on the First Fleet and there are those whose families and ancestors walked this earth and owned this land before Western civilisation existed."

The Southern Metropolitan Region encompasses the electoral Districts of Albert Park, Bentleigh, Brighton, Burwood, Caulfield, Hawthorn, Kew, Malvern, Oakleigh, Prahran and Sandringham.

The Region includes the suburbs of: Ashburton, Balwyn, Beaumaris, Bentleigh, Brighton, Burwood, Caulfield, Carnegie, Glen Iris, Hampton, Hawthorn, Kew, Malvern, Oakleigh, Sandringham, South Melbourne, South Yarra and St Kilda.
