Welcome
... and thanks for visiting my web site. Here you’ll find a little of my background and why it's vital to continue the work of the Victorian Labor Government.
On November 25, 2006, I had the privilege to be elected to represent the people of the Southern Metro Region where I live with my wife Tracey Ellery and our three school-age kids.
I’ve spent most of the last 15 years in business at a senior level - first with McKinsey & Company and then with LookSmart – the NASDAQ-listed technology company founded by Tracey and I.
Business took our family to Asia, New York and Silicon Valley, but we chose to come home to Melbourne almost 5 years ago as we truly believe it is the best place in the world to live, work and raise a family.
Since returning to Melbourne, I’ve been involved in a range of community organisations – including as being a Board Member of the Brotherhood of St.Laurence and contributed to policy debates through newspaper articles, TV and radio interviews.
Because of your support, I’m now able to contribute back to the community as part of the Brumby Labor Government. I am also very honoured to be Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier.
The Brumby Government is getting on with the job of governing for all Victorians. The strong team we have in the Victorian Labor Government have demonstrated that it’s possible to deliver strong economic management with compassionate social policy and a clear commitment to a sustainable environment.
The Brumby Government will continue working hard to deliver on the issues that matter to Victorian Families.
Yours sincerely,
Evan Thornley

SMART LIBRARY LAUNCH AT BAYSIDE
I recently launched a locally developed smart library system at Bayside Library. Putting Victorian innovation to work, the Smart Library RFID (radio frequency identification) will be of great benefit to the local area.
Currently, up to seven individual tags are applied to library books, including scanning codes, security tags and archive numbers. This new technology aims to replace all these tags with one 'smart tag', which will reduce costs significantly, increase efficiencies, and enable the library to provide better services to residents.
The Brumby Government is a strong supporter of innovative Victorian companies, such as the smart library developer FE Technologies. The launch of the library program coincided with the Government's $300 million Innovation Statement, Innovation: Victoria's Future.
MANRESA KINDERGARTEN SAVED
Recently, I had the pleasure of announcing a grant that will go towards the relocation of Manresa Kindergarten, which was told three years ago it needed to vacate its premises by 2010.
Many local volunteers campaigned tirelessly to see Manresa Kindergarten saved, and are relieved that the kindergarten can now continue to provide vital services to the community after 79 years in operation.
The $500,000 Brumby Government grant will help establish the Hawthorn Precinct - a childrens centre that will offer long day care, a kindergarten program, occasional care, maternal and child health services, playgroups and family support services. Manresa will be located within the precinct.
